Purpose
This article was designed to complement the information available in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide, specifically the required storage account and container settings to align with the Azure Blob Storage Immutability Limitations.
This article describes the correct options that must be selected when configuring an Azure Storage Account to leverage the Veeam Backup & Replication Azure Immutability feature, available starting with Veeam Backup & Replication 12.
Solution
Immutability can only be applied to new containers; it cannot be retroactively applied to existing backup data.
Do not enable immutability for existing containers in the Azure portal, as this could prevent Veeam Backup & Replication from processing these containers correctly, potentially leading to data loss.
It is crucial to configure the immutability-related settings for the storage account and container precisely as instructed.
Incorrect configuration of the storage account and its container can prevent Veeam Backup & Replication from managing immutability, which would necessitate the creation of a new storage account and container with the correct settings.
The setting requirements in this article are based on information available in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide:
Please note that since Veeam Backup & Replication requires versioning to be enabled at the storage account level, this storage account should not be used with other Veeam products unless they also require immutability and versioning. Therefore, it is advisable to review each Veeam product's requirements for Azure immutable storage thoroughly.
Storage Account Required Settings
In order to use Immutability with Azure Blob Storage, the following options must be set during Storage Account creation.
On the 'Data protection' tab of storage account creation:
- Disable 'soft delete for blobs'
Veeam Backup & Replication does not support soft delete for blobs. - Enable 'Versioning for blobs'
- Select 'Keep all versions'
This option may not appear for all Storage Accounts.
- Select 'Keep all versions'
- Disable 'Version-level immutability support'
We recommend turning off Version-level immutability in the Azure storage account to avoid the creation of default immutability policies, which are not supported.
Container-Level Required Setting
After creating the Storage Account with the required settings, create a new container with the following setting:
- Expand the Advanced section, and Enable 'version-level immutability support'
Post-Creation Requirements
- Do not configure lifecycle management policies for the container's data.
- Do not enable any default immutability policy at the storage account levelThere shouldn't even be an option to do this if version-level immutability was disabled at the storage account level during creation. or the container level.
The default immutability policies are not supported.
