Restoring from a backup is easy — until it isn’t. That’s what happened to UI Health after their IT team discovered that their logical unit numbers had been accidentally deleted from several virtual machines (VMs).
“We tried to recover them from backups, but recovery failed,” said Andrew Mosio, Director of Technology and Service Delivery at UI Health. “We spent the next 72 hours rebuilding machines and loading applications, and while patient care wasn’t impacted, we knew nothing like this could ever happen again. We had used our get-out-of-jail-free card, so we needed to replace our backup solution fast.”
Mosio and the team considered Commvault, Rubrik, and Veeam.
“Commvault and Rubrik were complicated, and that’s the last thing you want when your team is relatively small,” Mosio said. “We were leaning toward Veeam, but what happened next sealed the deal.”
During the crisis, someone on the IT team reached out to a Veeam contact, who immediately set up a backup infrastructure and showed the team how to restore data quickly and effortlessly.
“Veeam came to our rescue, and it didn’t end there because we developed an amazing partnership and remarkable synergy with them,” Mosio said. “Now we have complete control of our data everywhere in our infrastructure — not only from a data restore standpoint, but also from a security standpoint with quarterly security assessments. That peace of mind is priceless.”
UI Health deployed Veeam Data Platform Premium Edition to protect critical systems that support patient care like labs and imaging. If critical systems aren’t available, healthcare providers may not have the information needed to treat patients.
“Our mission is to provide uninterrupted patient care, and Veeam helps us meet that mission,” Mosio said. “For the first time, we can protect our entire hybrid infrastructure from cyberthreats because Veeam facilitates backup immutability everywhere, including AWS. Data is secure.”
In addition to deploying Veeam Data Platform, UI Health participates in the Veeam Cyber Secure program, which provides comprehensive support before, during, and after cyberattacks, including ransomware attacks. Veeam experts help with secure design and implementation, ongoing security assessments, and world-class incident response.
“Veeam Cyber Secure is an excellent addition to our data security toolbelt,” Mosio said. “It provides another level of comfort because we know our environment is configured to best practices. In fact, Veeam best practices have become a cornerstone for several business strategies: Cyber resilience and cybersecurity, BCDR, and infrastructure modernization. Our backup team works hand-in-hand with the security team, who gave their blessing to all things Veeam.”
Mosio said Veeam’s best practices apply to state regulatory compliance too.
“Veeam's robust infrastructure hardening practices significantly reduce the attack surface and mitigate potential risks, bolstering our overall security posture,” he said.
“We have a unified backup management solution that is tested and reviewed on a regular basis, making it easy to provide detailed reports, screen shots, and dashboards for audits. Audits are absolutely necessary, but they’re also a lot of work. Veeam streamlines regulatory compliance, and who could say no to that?”
