Tosyalı Holding eliminates IT downtime through data resilience by Veeam

Tosyalı Holding is one of Turkey's largest industrial enterprises, operating approximately 40 facilities and leading the steel industry with an annual production capacity of 12.5 million tons. The company’s products support a wide range of industrial sectors, including automotive, white goods, energy and construction.

Many of the steel furnaces at Tosyalı Holding run continuously for years at a time, manufacturing products that are distributed to customers worldwide. To keep its operations running smoothly around the clock, the company relies on its SAP HANA business systems and Microsoft 365 apps.

Kıvanç Kayiran, Senior System Support Specialist at Tosyalı Holding, said, “Our data is critical for us, as any downtime or data loss could halt our production and distribution operations — leading to big costs for the business.”

In total, Tosyalı Holding manages 200 TB of business data, growing at a rate of around 10% year-on-year. Against the backdrop of evolving information security threats — including ransomware and sophisticated state-backed cyberattacks — the company aimed to strengthen its data resilience.

“Previously, we used Veritas NetBackup to manage our backup processes,” said Kayiran. “One of the big challenges we faced is that backup jobs often failed, which meant we had to keep our eyes glued to the tool to make sure it was working properly. To guard against evolving threats such as ransomware, we looked for a more reliable solution.”

Working with its trusted Veeam reseller KRK Bilgi Teknolojileri, Tosyalı Holding has modernized its data protection strategy with Veeam Data Platform and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.

“One of our key technical requirements was the ability to perform real-time backups of our SAP HANA database, and Veeam addressed that need perfectly,” said Kayiran. “With Veeam, we can also create local backups of our Microsoft 365 data. Having a single point of control to manage all our on-premises and cloud data was another big advantage we saw with Veeam.”

Working with Veeam and KRK Bilgi Teknolojileri, Tosyalı Holding configured the new solutions to deliver always-on data protection for its mission-critical systems. Today, the company uses Veeam to perform continuous backups of its SAP HANA data and a full backup of its entire environment every night.

“Since our SAP HANA data is critical, it was important for us to transition to Veeam without any interruption for business users, and that’s exactly what we achieved,” said Kayiran. “One of my favorite features of Veeam is the user interface. It’s really quick and easy to create new policies and recover data — from entire virtual machines to individual files.”

Since making the switch to Veeam, Tosyalı Holding has eliminated the challenges associated with its previous data protection tool. The company can complete data backups 20% faster and, crucially, cut its recovery time objective by 20% — enabling it to minimize the business risk of SAP HANA downtime.

“Another big positive change with Veeam is that we’ve boosted our backup success rate to 98%,” said Kayiran. “Because backup errors are continuing to trend down, we don’t need to spend our time monitoring the solution. We trust that Veeam works, which allows us to spend more time supporting the business.”
