#1 Global Leader in Data Resilience

Randoncorp cuts backup times by 95% and total ownership cost by 56% with Veeam

Thanks to Veeam, we were able to bring maintenance for data protection in-house, significantly reducing costs. In total, over a period of 5 years, combined savings from doing in-house maintenance and reduced licensing costs, Randoncorp cut its costs by 56% when compared to our previous solution.

The Business Challenge

Randoncorp likes to say that it has been on the road for decades and that its finish line is the future. In practice, this ethos takes the form of a culture of continuous innovation and investments in the company’s global workforce of 16,000 people.

“Our employees make the Randoncorp brand what it is,” said Alan Vinicius Mello, IT Coordinator at Randoncorp. “To get the best out of them, we have to empower them with what they need to succeed. Increasingly, that’s rapid access to data.”

With data growing at 15% per year, Randoncorp hit a wall with its existing data protection solution. The multinational organization saw an opportunity to boost its capabilities and efficiency by finding a single, more powerful option to serve all its locations.

“When I joined Randoncorp, I was tasked with overhauling our approach to data protection,” said Alan Vinicius Mello. “Our previous solution was costly, required custom hardware, and was too slow. We were also using a third-party backup solution for our U.S. and China operations. My job was to find a platform to protect all Randoncorp data that could unlock performance and efficiency benefits.”

The Veeam Solution

Randoncorp transformed data availability for thousands of employees around the world using Veeam. As project lead, Alan Vinicius Mello whittled down the company’s choices using multiple selection criteria followed by PoCs for the top three options.

“Veeam was the clear winner, especially when compared to other vendors or upgrading to the latest version of our previous solution,” said Alan Vinicius Mello. “It met all our technical requirements, including cloud support and faster backup and restore times. The business case for Veeam was undeniable, offering us exceptional capabilities (such as immutable backups) at a lower price than our legacy solution or competitors. We also love the fact that Veeam offers local support within our region, which is something that many others simply can’t provide.”

Using Veeam, Randoncorp consolidated backups across all locations. The company stores backups both locally and a second encrypted copy in the public cloud. Randoncorp also opted for Veeam to protect its business-critical Microsoft 365 environment, which it uses for collaboration and productivity.

“From the databases we use for fabrication and assembly of our truck bodies to CAD designs for new components, Microsoft Exchange to SharePoint — Veeam ensures that our employees always have the data they need at their fingertips.”, said Alan Vinicius Mello.

Since deploying Veeam, Randoncorp has seen a significant increase in backup and restore performance. The company frequently makes use of the granular recovery feature, which allows it to restore a single file or email rather than an entire virtual machine (VM). Randoncorp has also increased backup frequency with Veeam, helping it to guard against data loss.

“Before, we would start our weekly backups at 2 p.m. on a Saturday and they wouldn’t finish until 7 a.m. on Monday — and sometimes even later, which could affect production systems during the workday,” said Alan Vinicius Mello. “With Veeam, we can back up the same amount of data in just two hours, which means they never overrun. We save huge amounts of time recovering the precise data we need rather than entire VMs, and we’re backing up more frequently and hanging onto our backups for longer.”

Veeam is also significantly benefiting Randoncorp’s bottom line, driving down both maintenance and licensing costs.

“Thanks to Veeam, we were able to bring maintenance for data protection in-house, significantly reducing costs.” said Alan Vinicius Mello. “In total, over a period of 5 years, combined savings from doing in-house maintenance and reduced licensing costs, Randoncorp cut its costs by 56% when compared to our previous solution.”

Randoncorp soon plans to implement Veeam Recovery Orchestrator to enhance its disaster recovery and business continuity strategies further. By automating and streamlining its recovery processes, the company will remove the risk of human error and improve efficiency, setting it up for even greater success.

“Veeam has been there for us every step of the way since we deployed it three years ago,” said Alan Vinicius Mello. “There’s a reason Veeam is a market leader that’s known for high customer satisfaction. Just two months after implementing it, a senior financial controller’s mailbox got corrupted and he lost 12 years’ worth of emails. Using Veeam, we were able to recover the whole mailbox in minutes. In a funny coincidence, that controller was actually the one that signed the check for our purchase of Veeam, so the experience really highlighted that it’s worth every cent!”

The Results

  • 95% reduction in backup times ensures that data is protected comprehensively with no impact on production systems
“Before, we would start our weekly backups at 2 p.m. on a Saturday and they wouldn’t finish until 7 a.m. on Monday — and sometimes even later, which could affect production systems during the workday,” said Alan Vinicius Mello. “With Veeam, we can back up the same amount of data in just two hours, which means they never overrun.”
  • Accelerates data recovery dramatically, contributing to higher employee productivity
Previously, the Randoncorp IT team was frequently tied up with restoring entire VMs in response to data recovery requests, whereas now they can drill down to the precise data that needs to be restored.
  • Eliminates maintenance costs by bringing maintenance in-house and cuts total ownership costs by 56%
The compelling business case for Veeam versus competing solutions made it an easy choice for Randoncorp.
