#1 Global Leader in Data Resilience

Veeam on IBM Cloud helps Movius advance the mobile agenda for global enterprises

When we tell enterprises that IBM built our cloud infrastructure and Veeam protects it, the rest of the conversation is pretty straightforward because IBM and Veeam are trusted names.

The business challenge

There are more than 3 billion smartphone users in the world, and experts predict that number will reach 3.8 billion by 2021. People are more connected than ever to their phones, making it inevitable they’re being used for personal and business purposes. In an Enterprise Mobility Trend Study conducted by Samsung, 93% of people use their phones for work every day.

Creating a clear separation between personal and professional use is critical for employers, and that’s where Movius comes in. A simple solution called MultiLine lets enterprises add a separate secure business line to an employees’ personal phone. There’s no confusion whether they’re receiving business or personal calls and texts.

Before offering MultiLine worldwide, Movius needed to shift from providing on-premises IT infrastructure to being a cloud provider with a far-reaching data center presence and powerful backup and restore capabilities. Data availability was key, but so was data protection because enterprises must comply with industry regulations for voice and messaging data retention.

“We evaluated several cloud platforms from global providers and chose IBM Cloud,” said George Backhaus, Senior Director of Product Management at Movius. “IBM offers exceptional cloud capabilities and has the international presence that puts us in the locations where we need to be.”

Choosing proven, powerful data protection was next.

“We told IBM exactly what we needed: Availability and resiliency,” Backhaus said. “IBM responded with one word: Veeam.”

The Veeam solution

Veeam on IBM Cloud delivers Cloud Data Management, helping Movius maximize data Availability, meet industry-specific data retention compliance requirements and optimize its business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) strategy. Veeam also helps Movius save $75,000 in data protection costs each year.

“The IBM Cloud infrastructure and Veeam on IBM Cloud enable us to deliver MultiLine to thousands of enterprises worldwide, including three of the world’s five largest banks, and prominent healthcare organizations,” Backhaus said. “When we tell enterprises that IBM built our cloud infrastructure and Veeam protects it, the rest of the conversation is pretty straightforward because IBM and Veeam are trusted names.”

Cantor-Fitzgerald Ireland deployed MultiLine. The company is part of Cantor Fitzgerald, a leading global financial services provider. Cantor Fitzgerald Ireland is subject to MiFID II, a legislative framework instituted by the European Union to regulate financial markets and improve protection for investors. By law, Cantor Fitzgerald Ireland must record and protect all mobile voice and text communications or face fines of up to €5 million, or 10% of its global turnover.

“Cantor Fitzgerald Ireland chose MultiLine because it combines a secure mobile line with built-in call and message capture,” Backhaus said. “Veeam helps us encrypt data before, during and after backup and replication, enabling them to more easily comply with MiFID II.”

Colorado-based 5280 Home Care and Attendant Services chose MultiLine so nurse practitioners can use their personal cell phones to communicate with patients. Text exchanges between medical staff and patients are not explicitly covered by HIPAA, putting healthcare organizations at risk of incurring fines of up to $50,000 for each violation. Veeam helps MultiLine encrypt data in the IBM Cloud so healthcare organizations can comply with HIPAA.

Veeam also helps Movius strengthen its BCDR strategy. Cloud Data Management capabilities include verifying data recoverability and meeting recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTOs and RPOs) of 15 minutes or fewer. Veeam backs up and replicates 80 virtual machines (50 TB) on-premises and to IBM Cloud.

Movius saves $75,000 in data protection costs each year too.

“If we had built our own backup solution, we would have had to create a massive, mirrored database server, which is costly,” Backhaus said. “Instead, Veeam provides a reliable, cost-effective BCDR infrastructure in IBM Cloud.”

The results

  • Helps bring secure MultiLine mobility to enterprises worldwide
IBM Cloud and Veeam on IBM Cloud enabled Movius to roll out MultiLine internationally. Enterprises add a secure corporate phone number to employees’ smartphones so professional and personal calls and texts are separated.
  • Supports regulatory compliance including MiFID II, HIPAA and GDPR
Veeam manages how, when and where backups are encrypted, stored and replicated in IBM Cloud, simplifying data protection and helping Movius ensure customers are compliant.
  • Saves $75,000 in data protection costs each year
“Not only do we save substantial money with Veeam, we also strengthen and standardize Cloud Data Management across a continually expanding infrastructure,” Backhaus said. “Data Availability and resiliency have never been better.”
