It’s no exaggeration to say that Clalit Health Services (Clalit) is changing the face of healthcare by harnessing advanced technology. For instance, the organization’s C-Pi platform uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help Clalit’s doctors and nurses deliver preventative healthcare that drives down disease rates in the community.
"We are redesigning the healthcare system to provide the right treatment to the right patient at the right time, every time,” said Professor Ran D. Balicer, Chief Innovation Officer and Deputy-Director General at Clalit. “We strive to achieve this goal using all available technological means, with an emphasis on data science and artificial intelligence."
As a technology-driven organization, Clalit demands a lot from its IT services. The IT team are under pressure to ensure that availability and performance remain at the highest levels 24/7. With data volumes rocketing and cybercriminals becoming increasingly cunning, that challenge is always intensifying.
“We must maintain IT service continuity no matter what, whether we’re hit by a cyberattack or the outbreak of war means a clinic needs to move location at short notice,” said Oded Refaeli, Infrastructure Manager at Clalit. “For us, downtime doesn’t just mean financial penalties — it could put people’s lives at risk. With three separate data protection solutions to manage, we knew that we weren’t operating as efficiently as we could be, and we looked for an alternative.”
Clalit chose Veeam as its data protection solution of choice for its entire IT environment, including virtual and physical servers and its network of clinics. Veeam offers a central point of control for safeguarding the organization’s increasingly diverse IT landscape.
“Before selecting Veeam, we compared offerings from Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, Veritas and IBM,” said Oded Refaeli. “Veeam hit all our selection criteria, such as ease of management, competitive pricing, good local support and built-in cyber-resiliency.”
By consolidating from three solutions to a single toolset, Clalit saw efficiency increase immediately. The organization is now backing up 2.5 PBs with Veeam, with copies stored at each of its two data centers.
“Standardizing on Veeam saves our IT team significant time and effort on managing data protection,” said Oded Refaeli. “All our systems are backed up by Veeam: electronic medical records, prescriptions, medical imaging and more. With immutable backups and backup verification from Veeam, we’ve added new layers to our cyber-resiliency strategy.”
To protect its growing containerized application landscape, Clalit deployed Kasten K10. The organization uses Kasten K10 to back up critical innovation projects such as its Supermodels initiative, which uses AI to support clinical decision making across the Clalit network.
“Our success with Veeam made Kasten K10 the natural choice for backup and restore of our containerized environment,” said Oded Refaeli. “We’re in the process of migrating more of our apps to containers, and the combination of Veeam and Kasten K10 means we have comprehensive protection throughout this transition. With ready-to-go backup and replication capabilities, we can drive down the time to launch new apps to our users.”
As Clalit maintains its position at the leading edge of healthcare innovation, Veeam gives the organization’s IT team the assurance it can deliver services around-the-clock.
“At Clalit, we’re committed to bringing the very best in AI-enabled healthcare to the millions of people that we serve as part of our network,” said Liora Shechter, VP, Digital & Technology at Clalit. “With Veeam, we can focus on pushing the limits of what’s currently possible in healthcare, confident that our data is well-protected every step of the way.”
