Veeam helps Avery Dennison meet growing global demand

The Business Challenge

Avery Dennison is a leader in materials science. The company’s collective expertise and global scale enable it to deliver innovative, intelligent and sustainable solutions. With more than 180 operating locations worldwide, Avery Dennison designs and manufactures solutions for nearly every industry including food and beverage, public safety and healthcare.

Avery Dennison’s solutions are wide ranging and impact millions of people. They include radio-frequency identification labeling materials for food safety and life-saving reflective materials for emergency vehicles and first responders’ clothing. The company also produces medical-grade adhesive tapes and personal protective equipment (PPE). When the COVID-19 pandemic caused a worldwide shortage of PPE, Avery Dennison quickly reconfigured its manufacturing facilities to produce more.

To meet the growing demand for products, Avery Dennison automates as many manufacturing processes as possible. The IT systems supporting manufacturing must be available around the clock, but the company’s two backup solutions didn’t offer the functionality required for modern data protection.

Merce Garces, Senior Manager, Platform Services at Avery Dennison, said the legacy solutions presented three challenges. They failed to provide replication for disaster recovery (DR), high-speed restore functionality to meet the company’s recovery objectives and cloud integration for business continuity.

The Veeam Solution

Avery Dennison replaced legacy backup with Veeam to ensure availability and business uptime. Veeam provides fast, reliable replication for DR, instant restore features to meet the company’s recovery objectives and multi-cloud integration for business continuity.

“As an industry leader, our company experiences periods of increased demand for products,” Garces said. “Veeam helps us meet this demand by protecting every IT system that supports manufacturing.”

Several systems support manufacturing which include the CRM, ERP, order management and manufacturing execution systems. Veeam backs up 750 TB across more than 1,000 virtual machines (VMs) on-premises for fast, local recovery and replicates off-premises for DR. IBM AIX, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle underpin the systems, giving Avery Dennison multiple high-speed recovery options such as Veeam Instant VM Recovery and Veeam Explorers for Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle.

“Having the ability to replicate and recover our manufacturing systems in minutes is hugely valuable to our business,” Garces said. “It could take up to 24 hours to recover a critical system before we deployed Veeam. Now it takes minutes, making it simpler and easier to meet the company’s recovery objectives.”

Avery Dennison also uses Veeam to send backup copies to a secure, private cloud for business continuity. Flexible, universal licensing enables the company to back up any workload to anywhere. Veeam licensing uses a simple consumption model and is cloud-, workload- and hardware-agnostic.
