Challenge

The Cortex XDR agent (Traps agent) by Palo Alto Networks is installed on a server or a workstation.

The following error message appears during the backup process.

Error Microsoft SQL server hosting the configuration database is currently unavailable. Possible reasons are heavy load, networking issue, server reboot, or hot backup.
Error Please wait, and try again later.

Cause

This issue is caused by the Cortex XDR agent. This agent is crashing the sqlserver.exe process on the Veeam Agent machine. The Veeam Agent backup job fails as the Veeam Agent configuration database is hosted on the SQL LocalDB instance.

Restart of the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows service resolves the issue temporarily as it restarts sqlserver.exe due to dependencies of the service.

C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Local DB\Instances\VeeamEndPoint\error.log shows:

Server * Short Stack Dump
Server 00007FFEA626F383 Module(sqldk+000000000002F383)
Server 0000000040EC10E4 Module(cyinjct+00000000000010E4)

Server Stack Signature for the dump is 0x00000000077B8633
Server External dump process return code 0x20000001.
where 'cyinjct' is a component of the Cortex XDR agent.

Solution

According to Palo Alto Networks, this is a known issue with the Veeam backup software. It has been addressed on the Cortex XDR version 7.2.1. Issue number - CPATR-11179.

There are two options to resolve the issue:

  • Upgrade the Cortex XDR agent to the latest version.

or

  • Create an exclusion for sqlserver.exe and disable injection.
