For most larger environments that utilize 10GbE connections throughout the environment, there should be plenty of throughput to allow for fewer proxies. For example, if there is a single VSAN datastore, then Veeam Backup & Replication will only allow a maximum of 32 active snapshots, meaning that at most 32 VMs at one time can be processed. Therefore, to optimize job performance, ensure that the total number of tasks that all proxies can complete in the environment is 32 and that the destination repositories are configured to allow that many tasks as well.
Starting with Veeam Backup & Replication 11a, the task scheduler now uses the dedicated threshold of a maximum number of open VM snapshots per vSAN datastores, with the default limit of 32 snapshots. You can control this setting with the VSANMaxSnapshotsNum (DWORD) registry value under the 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication' key on the backup server.
Key Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication
Value Name: VSANMaxSnapshotsNum
Value Type: DWORD (32-Bit) Value
Value Default Data: 32
