At Veeam, we understand that some customers may have hardware that comes pre-installed with Windows Server IoT or Windows Storage Server, and they may want to use these to fill the role of Veeam-product component servers. While Windows Server IoT and Windows Storage Server are binary equivalents to standard Windows Server, it is important to note that Veeam does not test its software with these operating systems. Therefore, the use of Windows Server IoT or Windows Storage Server falls under our Experimental Support guidelines.
If a Veeam-related issue arises while using Windows Server IoT or Windows Storage Server, our support team will provide their best effort to assist. However, you may be asked to reproduce the issue using standard Windows Server OS, to isolate the issue as being OS-related. In the event that the issue is determined to be caused specifically by the usage of Windows Server IoT or Windows Storage Server, Veeam Support may be limited in their ability to assist.
While we understand that customers may have unique hardware requirements, we encourage using validated configurations to ensure the best possible experience with Veeam's products. This approach can help minimize any issues and provide a stable environment for protecting your critical data.
Finally, it is important to note that deployments of Windows Server IoT/Windows Storage Server may have special dedicated use rights provided by the OEM. It is crucial that you verify with that OEM that it is acceptable to install third-party software, such as Veeam components, before proceeding.
The following components have been identified by other customers as functional with Windows Server IoT/Windows Storage Server:
Generally speaking, any component that does not require a UI (e.g., Veeam Backup & Replication Console) or IIS (e.g., Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager) should theoretically function with Windows Server IoT/Windows Storage Server.
Remember to check System Requirements to ensure the underlying hardware has sufficient processing power and memory.
However, some vendor-based distributions may not have the .NET feature enabled or may encounter issues during the installation of the required .NET framework version. This could cause some components listed above to not function correctly. Therefore, we recommend that you contact your storage vendor for additional information about the installation of third-party software on their bundled OS.
