Challenge

When adding an Object Storage Repository, the following error occurs:

The selected bucket supports blob versioning.
Select a bucket with disabled blob versioning.
Error

Cause

This issue occurs because the cloud storage has Versioning enabled.

Starting with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v7, when creating an Object Storage Repository, the software verifies if Versioning is enabled. If Versioning is detected at the object storage level and the immutability option is not enabled in the repository settings, the creation of the Object Storage Repository is blocked. This check aims to prevent two issues: (1) data corruption caused by a Versioning rollback altering backup files and (2) unmanaged versions.

Versioning Support

Considerations and Limitations

  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 does not support the Versioning feature for Amazon S3 buckets and S3 Compatible buckets unless Object Lock is enabled for buckets and immutability is enabled for object storage.
  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 does not support the Versioning feature for Azure storage accounts unless immutability is enabled for object storage.

Immutability in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v8

  • An Object Storage Repository with immutability enabled can be used to store Backup and Backup Copy data.

Immutability in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v7/v7a

  • An Object Storage Repository with Immutability enabled can only be used to store Backup Copy data.

Solution

For Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 version 8.x

When adding an object storage repository and this error occurs, consider the following:

  • If the Object Storage Repository will be used to store primary Backup data or secondary Backup Copy data, enable the immutability option within the repository settings.
  • If the Object Storage being added was previously used to store primary Backup data using Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 version 6 or 7, and must now be added as an Object Storage Repository in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v8, please create a Veeam Support case for assistance.

For Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 version 7.x

When adding an object storage repository and this error occurs, consider the following:

  • If the Object Storage Repository will be used to store primary Backup data, disable Versioning at the object storage level.

    Note:
Versioning is enabled by default for some object storage vendors, such as Backblaze, and cannot be disabled. Veeam Support can provide a workaround to disable the security check that prevents the creation of an Object Storage Repository. However, this workaround does not mitigate the risk of backup data corruption caused by a Versioning rollback. Therefore, it is critical to never perform a Versioning rollback that would modify backup data. For more information, please create a Veeam Support Case.
  • If the Object Storage Repository will be used to store secondary Backup Copy data, enable the immutability option within the repository settings.
