Challenge

When adding an Azure account to Veeam Backup & Replication, you would use the Add > Microsoft Azure compute account... then,  on the Subscription tab of the wizard that opens, select the "Create a new account" option. Doing this will register a new Azure AD Application. The account used to register the AD Application has to have the appropriate permissions. For more information, please review: Adding Microsoft Azure Accounts in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide.

If you prefer to set up a custom role for Veeam Integration, you can use Azure PowerShell method to create one.

Solution

Steps for creating a custom role can be found in the User Guide here:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/azure_custom_role.html

More Information

For versions of Veeam Backup & Replication prior to v9.5 U4, the following command must be used to manually register the account with Veeam Backup & Replication.

NOTE: Please be aware in versions of Veeam Backup & Replication prior to 9.5 U4, when creating a custom role the password will be stored in the logs in plaintext. More information is available here.

Once the role and user have been created, they need to be added to Veeam Backup and Replication using the following method. This role cannot be added through the User Interface.

  1. Start Windows command line (CMD.exe or PowerShell.exe) with Administrative privileges
  2. Navigate to the Veeam Backup & Replication installation folder
    (default: C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup)
cd 'C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup\'
  1. Enter the following command to register the account.
Veeam.backup.manager.exe REGISTERAZUREACCOUNT
