Secure cloud storage made easy. Need we say more? Yes! Because Veeam Data Cloud Vault v2 is here and promises to be better than ever. But first…
Secure Storage is a MUST
Veeam’s 2024 Ransomware Trends Report shows that 93% of ransomware attacks explicitly target backups. As bad actors evolve their methods and attempt to bring your successful recovery efforts to a screeching halt; cybersecurity tasks can feel more daunting by the day. But it’s not all doom and gloom. By taking the necessary steps, you can prevent a bad situation from happening, and Veeam is here to help.
The 3-2-1 rule has long been “the golden rule” of backup and has evolved in recent times to 3-2-1-1-0 as attempts to compromise environments become more complex and far reaching. So, what should you be doing?
- 3 copies of data: That’s your production copy, a backup, and a backup copy
- 2 different media: For example, mixing flash, disk, object, tape, etc.
- 1 off-site: Separated from production in another location, like the cloud
- 1 offline or immutable: Air gapped, immutable, or both
- 0 recovery errors: Routine testing to ensure recoverability
Cloud Storage to the Rescue
Cloud storage has long been the go-to for organizations looking to get a backup off-site. In large part due to the on-demand availability, seemingly infinite scalability, security tools like immutability and encryption at your fingertips, and more. Yet, despite the numerous advantages cloud storage has to offer, many users still struggle. The three most common issues include:
- Controlling cloud costs: Cloud storage incurs charges for not just the storage component, but other factors like write and read transactions, data retrieval, and egress. This makes forecasting a nightmare, resulting in potential bill-shock and overspend.
- Security: With cloud providers spending billions on security, you’re in good hands. But shared responsibility means you take on required actions to ensure the environment is architected, implemented, and maintained securely.
- Resources/expertise: Knowledge and skill gaps are common in this rapidly evolving market, making secure, off-site cloud storage unobtainable for some who lacks the ability and/or resources to configure and manage properly.
Introducing Veeam Vault v2
We are both delighted and excited to announce the general availability of Veeam Vault v2, building further on the three promises of the solution’s predecessor earlier in 2024: predictability, security, and ease. Let’s take a deeper look.
Predictable Pricing
We’re maintaining the same all-inclusive, predictable approach as before, but significantly reducing pricing. Veeam Vault now starts at just $14/TB/month. This wraps up unpredictable storage, transaction, retrieval, and egress costs into one simple price that can’t be beaten like-for-like.
Increasing Durability
Veeam Vault now features two editions — Foundation and Advanced — to provide you with more choice when meeting your needs (more on that later). Advanced Edition introduces support for zone-redundant storage (ZRS) on Microsoft Azure Blob. With ZRS, your backups are synchronously copied across three Azure availability zones in a region, with a durability of at least 12-nines over a given year. That protects your backups against the event of an entire data center failure.
Unlimited Restores
We’re also introducing unlimited restores in Advanced Edition. While the need to perform restores multiple times in a given year of your entire data estate in Veeam Vault is unlikely, refer back to the “0” in the 3-2-1-1-0 rule, and the necessity to test. This new capability gives organizations the freedom to test routinely without the fear of additional costs related to read transactions, data retrieval, and egress.
Cool Storage
Both editions now leverage Azure Blob cool storage, and some will notice that that’s a change from hot storage in V1. There is no performance difference between these tiers, so you can still expect the highest backup and restore performance from Veeam Vault.
Deeper Integration
Veeam Vault is still wholly pre-configured and fully managed for you. And now features even deeper integration with Veeam Data Platform 12.3, coming later this year. This gives you the ability to procure, provision, and monitor your Veeam Vaults. Stay tuned for that release and a deeper dive into how-to.
Procurement Vehicles
Veeam Vault continues to be available on Microsoft Azure Marketplace, but is now also available through your preferred reseller, as well as the Veeam Online Store.
Wrapping It Up
As you can see, the latest release makes implementing a secure, off-site backup into your strategy not just easy, but more attainable. The following table highlights the features and differences between Foundation and Advanced Edition.
