We are excited to announce the release of Kasten K10 version 6.0, the latest and most advanced version of our industry-leading platform that provides enterprise-grade Kubernetes data protection and application mobility. This release helps customers scale their cloud native data protection efficiently.
Kubernetes deployments are growing at an unprecedented rate. Gartner predicts that by 2027, more than 90% of global organizations will be running containerized applications in production. However, today’s market conditions are scarred with financial uncertainty and a shortage of cloud native skills. Therefore, you must ensure operational efficiencies are in place to unleash the full potential of your cloud native environments while protecting your data. Additionally, security remains an imperative as organizations focus on keeping their businesses running. With this release, we also continue to innovate in this growing ecosystem, so that you can take advantage of the best-of-breed innovations across Kubernetes deployment environments, storage technologies and database diversity in this evolving IT landscape.
Grab your coffee and join me for a quick spin around the new capabilities of Kasten K10 V6.0 and how they can make your life easier.
Scalability & Efficiency Improvements
Data Protection at Scale
Kasten K10 V6.0 brings you a wide set of capabilities that enable enterprises to scale Kubernetes data protection efficiently. These include meeting organizations where they are in their cloud native journey by leveraging enterprise infrastructure investments, operational know-how, as well as introducing new innovations that dramatically increase the productivity and consistency of operations in your organizations. Let’s dive into some of these.
Kubernetes Support on Veeam Data Platform
Customers need to scale cloud native adoption and deployment without friction. They want to use the tools and processes they are familiar with in their own context. In addition to a cloud native approach, Kasten K10 now provides additional data and management path integrations with the new Veeam Backup & Replication v12. This integration includes:
- A new Kasten K10 plug-in for VBR Console that gives centralized visibility and management of Kubernetes backups
- Instant recovery capabilities that leverage Veeam’s cutting-edge technology to dramatically lower recovery time objectives (RTOs)
Intelligent Protection With Application Fingerprinting
With its unique application-specific approach, Kasten K10 lets you backup and recover logical data services using extensible Kanister blueprints. You can protect any database you choose with Kasten K10, whether you use DBaaS like Amazon RDS or run PostgreSQL in your Kubernetes cluster. Kasten K10 now takes this protection to the next level of automation with the introduction of Application Fingerprinting. Kasten K10 can identify the application makeup along with the underlying data services and dynamically apply appropriate blueprints that match a certain pattern. This powerful automation capability allows you to remove risk, reduce complexity, achieve operational consistency and enforce compliance so that you can pave the way for application protection at scale.
Your very own custom Transform Libraries
Kasten K10 incorporates a powerful Application Transformation Engine that empowers the Platform Ops teams to provide application portability benefits at a massive scale. These powerful and flexible transform operations (including Test, Remove, Add, Copy, Move and Replace) enable the seamless restoration and migration of applications across heterogenous Kubernetes environments. Now with the introduction of Transform Sets, organizations can create a custom library of chained transforms that can be saved and reused for secure, efficient operations with consistent results.
In the video below, we demonstrate the disaster recovery of an on-premises application operating in an upstream Kubernetes environment, migrated to the AWS cloud in an EKS environment, all while leveraging Transform Sets to maintain freedom of choice — at scale.
Flexible multi-cluster license management
Using Kasten K10 V6.0, you can save even more time and money by easily managing licenses for a multi-cluster system from a central location. The primary cluster maintains a global pool of licenses that receives any excess license capacity from licenses installed on secondary clusters. This gives you flexibility and efficiency to meet the efficiency requirements of your organization’s dynamically sized, multi-cluster environments. You can read more about the details here.
Deploy Kasten K10 directly from Amazon EKS Console
Kasten K10 is available on the AWS Marketplace for Containers and was featured as a launch partner for AWS Marketplace for Containers Anywhere. Now you can find and deploy Kasten K10 to your EKS clusters directly through the EKS console. You can also use command-line interface (CLI), eksctl, AWS APIs or infrastructure-as-code tools (such as AWS CloudFormation and Terraform) for the deployment, so that your Kubernetes applications are protected from the get-go. In addition to the flexible deployment and payment options via the AWS Marketplace, Kasten K10 is continually scanned for common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs), providing you an additional level of security.
Easy restore for Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization and more
But this is not all when it comes to helping organizations increase their cloud native data protection efficiently with this latest version of Kasten K10. You can also easily restore VMs in a Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization environment that provides you not only the productivity boost that organizations are looking for, but also freedom of choice and reduced cost. Enterprise Ransomware Protection
With growing threat vectors and ransomware attacks, security continues to be a here-and-now priority for our customers and us. As a Kubernetes-native application, Kasten K10 has been innovating right beside cloud native ecosystems to ensure that we can provide a shared context to expand ransomware detection, enable continuous auditing and provide seamless recovery across the DevSecOps environment, including:
Development: Transparent experiences driven with deep integrations into the Red Hat OpenShift managed platform for secure foundations, Argo for GitOps workflows and Kyverno for policy as code from the get-go.
Deployment: Integration with Kubernetes-native auditing with integrations, including Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security for security posture management and AWS Guard Duty for advanced threat detection.
Operations: Policy management and compliance with integrations, including with Grafana for visibility, Kubernetes native RBAC and audit logging for shared context, and AWS Secrets Manager for credentials management.
Watch this video to learn how easy it is to automate Kasten K10 policy creation with Kyverno, so that applications can be at the time of deployment.
Cloud Native Integrations
Freedom of choice has been a foundational tenet for Kasten by Veeam’s approach to Kubernetes data protection. This includes the flexibility to work across diverse Kubernetes distributions, deployment models, storage implementations, etc., so that you can use the best-in-class implementations for your application mobility and data protection needs. While the list is long, examples of advancements include:
Additional workload types:
- Kubernetes v1.26 — This brings a new container registry, CSI migration for vSphere, as well as improved Kubernetes metrics.
- Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.12 — This brings support for a more up to date and secure version of RHEL, plus support of vSphere on different zones and regions.
- New built-in blueprint for Amazon RDS — This allows for expanded reach with native support for Amazon RDS (and workloads relying on it), as well as a baseline template to craft other DBaaS blueprints.
Additional hybrid environments:
- Google Anthos — This allows for Hybrid Cloud support on GCP.
- Cross-platform restore targets for Tanzu Backups — This capability enables you to import applications with block-mode exports in clusters that do not natively support it, hence allowing application portability.
- Cisco Hybrid Cloud CVD with Red Hat OpenShift and Kasten K10 — A detailed design and deployment guide for data protection in hybrid clouds with Cisco HyperFlex.
Additional storage options:
- NetApp ONTAP Simple Storage Service (S3) — This interoperability increases the storage targets options.
- Dell-EMC ECS Enterprise Object Storage — This interoperability as a S3 compatible store increases the available target storage options.
