Challenge

A Veeam Backup & Replication job fails with either of the following errors:

  • Error: Not enough licenses.

  • Error: Unable to process the workload: your license has been exceeded

Cause

The limits of the installed license have been exceeded.

Solution

Information regarding Veeam Backup & Replication licensing can be found in the user guide here:

To begin investigating a license limit exceeded situation, it is best to review the License Information to understand what objects are currently consuming licenses. If an object is listed as licensed and no longer needs to have a license assigned, its license assignment can be revoked manually.

More Information

Notes and Scenarios
  • With a Socket License, during every job run, as a VM is processed, Veeam Backup & Replication will determine which host the VM is on and check to see if that host is already licensed or if there are available socket licenses to be assigned to that host.
  • When using a Socket-based license, if a hypervisor host is rebuilt, it may cause a duplicate entry to appear in License Information. If this occurs, revoke the duplicate entries, and run the job. The job will assign a license to the correct host during the next job run.
  • When using an Instance-based license, if a VMs ref-ID (VMware MORef-ID or Hyper-V VM GUID) changes, the VM will be considered a new object, potentially leading to a duplicate entry within the License Information section. If this happens, revoke both duplicate entries. During the next job run, a license will be assigned correctly.
  • When using an Instance-based license, all workloads that have been processed in the past 31 days are considered protected. If a machine is removed from a job, the license usage will remain assigned to that machine for 31 days and then automatically release.
  • Once a VM and Physical machine is considered protected, and a license is assigned, it can be backed up by any number of jobs on the same Veeam Backup & Replication server.
  • For NAS Backup, if the same file share is protected by more than one backup job, Veeam Backup & Replication calculates the instance license usage based on the sum of all protected data generated by all jobs for that share. Therefore, using the Secondary Target option is advisable instead of creating multiple jobs for the same file share.
